The exhibition displays all Shi’s artworks made out of stainless steel wires from 2008 to 2015. More than 16 pieces including "Bird's Nest", "Mountain (bicycle)", "Door", "Harley Motor", "Violin" and "White Lines" are on display.
By means of "deconstructing" and "reconstructing", the artist demonstrates the "lightness" and "transparency" of his creations. Easel paintings made out of mixed materials as well as sculptural installations are similar to the original size such as his paintings of a Harley motorcycle, a Chinese zither and a screen.
Talking about his work, Shi said, "By removing the coral parts inside, I transform those tangibly real things into a deal of shells, and on the other hand, they are still real things, as their fundamental structures remain after all."
"When it came to the sculptural installation, I initially wanted to express material sculpture making as well as the concept of installation making. By doing so, I intend to keep the environment and construction in harmony by applying soft and transparent materials. Actually, my initiative is to make things weightless and psychologically relaxing. In this way, these artworks don't look that intentional, easily evoking a feeling of shared emotion with the constructional environment," he said. Apart from the space, Shi focused on time in some of the installations. For instance, the original shape of the doors and windows has been preserved. "I keep back burnt charcoal in hope of transforming it from the original shape to a new formation through fire-burning. Consequently, the transformation converts its materiality, creating a new experience. It seems that it's the disappearance of materiality that makes a kind of spirituality," he added.
Shi Jindian, born in Yunnan Province, China in 1953, graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1974. He now lives and works in Chengdu. The artist has experienced a turn from conventional sculpture to modern art. Such a turning point suggests a kind of "sustainable growth" of a constantly creative artist, and his constant creation makes Shi Jindian one of the most unique and valued artists in Chinese contemporary and modern art. As he has gained recognition, his work has been collected by galleries, institutions and individual collectors from China, the United States, Europe, Australia and Korea.
The exhibition will run from July 9 - 25, 2015 at Pin Art in Caochangdi village, Beijing.
