Casting a prominent spotlight on Asian talents, the 26th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) rolled out the red carpet for its Gala Opening Thursday night.

SGIFF is committed to inspiring the discovery of independent cinema locally and in the region. Over the next two weeks, it will showcase a series of the newest independent movies in Asia, including Chinese film director and screenwriter Jia Zhangke's "Mountains May Depart," which just won two awards during the prestigious Taipei Golden Horse Awards.

According to the organiser, all the films have been specially selected from various sections of SGIFF, and each echoes Asia's story through film in their unique ways.

Taiwanese actress and model Sonia Sui Tang, and Singapore's Golden Horse-winning actress Yeo Yann Yann, were among the special guests who graced the Festival's Gala Opening at Marina Bay Sands.

"Southeast Asia is rich with an eclectic mix of film talents and auteurs, each with their own unique expressions and styles," said Yuni Hadi, SGIFF executive director.

"With over 150 specially selected films and programs, SGIFF is a choice platform for facilitating and expanding the conversation and interest on filmmaking, and it is always exciting to discover these independent voices and connect them with the wider international audience."

The film festival will run through Dec. 6.
