The nine films advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 88th Academy Awards are "The Brand New Testament"(Belgium) by Jaco Van Dormael, "Embrace of the Serpent" (Colombia) by Ciro Guerra, "A War"(Denmark) by Tobias Lindholm, "The Fencer"(Finland) by Klaus Härö, "Mustang" (France) by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, "Labyrinth of Lies"(Germany) by Giulio Ricciarelli, "Son of Saul"(Hungary) by László Nemes, "Viva"(Ireland) by Paddy Breathnach and "Theeb"(Jordan) by Naji Abu Nowar.

However, all Chinese entries missed the cut, including Cannes Best Director prize-winner Hou Hsiao-hsien's "The Assassin" (Taiwan), the tragicomedy "Go Away Mr. Tumor" by Han Yan (Chinese mainland), and Dante Lam's "To the Fore"(Hong Kong).

A total of 81 films were submitted by their respective countries for this year's best foreign-language feature award. The last time the Chinese mainland got a nomination was when Zhang Yimou was nominated in the category with "Hero" in 2003. Recently, the Chinese film "The Grandmaster" (Hong Kong) by Wong Kar-wai appeared in foreign Oscar's 9-title shortlist in December 2013.

The period action piece from the director of "Chungking Express," "2046," and "In the Mood for Love" tells the story of Ip Man, the martial arts master who trained Bruce Lee and starred Tony Leung Chiu-wai as Ip Man, and Zhang Ziyi ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon").

Foreign Language Film nominations are being determined in two phases. The Phase I committee, consisting of several hundred Academy members, screened the original submissions in the category between mid-October and Dec. 14. The group's top six choices, as well as three additional selections voted by the Academy's Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, made the shortlist.

The shortlist will be winnowed down to the category's five nominees by specially invited committees in New York, Los Angeles and London.

The 88th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Jan. 14, 2016 at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The 88th Oscars will be held on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre.
