"The Last Witch Hunter", a Hollywood dark fantasy thriller, is lighting up the New Year holiday season in the Chinese film market.

The film, directed by Breck Eisner, stars Vin Diesel as an immortal witch-hunter who must stop a plague from ravaging New York City. Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, Julie Engelbrecht and the veteran British actor Michael Caine are also in the cast.

At the premiere in Beijing on Friday, the Chinese distributors announced it was set for general mainland release on Jan. 15, 2016.

Though Diesel was invited to attend the Beijing premiere, he was unable to appear due to a conflicting work schedule.

The distributors said the film will let Chinese audiences experience aspects of Western witch culture, and will be a feast of visual effects. Chinese filmgoers will see the full-length version available in other markets without any cuts, they added.

The film was released in North America in October 2015. As of January 1, 2016, it had grossed US$27.4 million in North America and US$81.0 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of US$108.4 million.
