Huang eventually accepted the role and married Angelababy with a bald head, but wore a wig at the wedding ceremony.

It took more than half a year to complete the filming, director Huo Jianqi said, they didn't just do it in front of a green screen, but did it in different locations such as Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Gansu Province and India, trying to truthfully re-enact Xuan Zang's journey of hardship step by step. Huang described it as the toughest filming he ever experienced in his career.

"This was hard, but worthwhile," director Huo said, "A big crew was out there filming, everyone felt the difficulties. But when you feel it is worthwhile, you will face the difficulties and overcome them."

The Chairman of China Film Group Corporation, La Peikang, said that Master Xuan Zang was an extremely important figure in the history of cultural exchange between China and India and devoted himself to increasing communication between the two civilizations.

Zhang Hongsen, director of the Film Bureau under the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, said that Xuan Zang was a role model that helped push Chinese civilization forward and will inspire the present generation. "We have seen great films about Joan of Arc, Gandhi, Mozart, Confucius, Sun Yat-sen, and Lu Xun, now I hope that Xuan Zang’s film can also present a culturally powerful historic figure to the world."

Famed director Wong Kar-wai is an artistic director for the film.

"Xuan Zang" will debut in Chinese theaters on April 29, 2016.
