Angelababy plays a top Chinese jet fighter pilot who battles aliens in the film, which is directed by Roland Emmerich. Despite the prominent absence of Will Smith, other cast members from the first “Independence Day”, including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch and Vivica A. Fox, will return and work alongside new stars such as Liam Hemsworth in the film.

Emmerich explained that he had talked to Will Smith about acting in the sequel, but as the actor has been involved in another sci-fi movie "After Earth" at that time with his son, he turned the offer down. Instead, the director hired new actors, including Angelababy, for the film to introduce the sci-fi classic to a new generation of moviegoers and fans.

Angelababy said her husband Huang, also a big movie star in China, loved the original "Independence Day." "When he learned that I had an offer to act in the film, he was more thrilled than me," she said, also adding that her husband will invite family, friends and fans to an exclusive screening of the film.

Singaporean actor Chin Han will portray the leader of the Chinese Space Squadron and the uncle of Angelababy's character. The actress told China.org.cn at the press conference that she was heartbroken when she saw her only surviving family member dies and she cannot save him. "We all sacrifice our family for the peace of the Earth," she said.

Emmerich said he normally didn't do sequels for his films, but when he directed "2012", the technologies inspired him to make a sequel for "Independence Day."

"Independence Day" grossed over US$817.4 million worldwide in 1996, becoming that year's highest-grossing film and the second highest-grossing film of all time at that point. It also won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. It was not imported to the Chinese market, but many Chinese fans watched it on VHS, VCD and DVD, and were stunned by the destruction of world landmarks and the wide-scale of film's story.

The film opens in China on June 24, 2016.
