American film director Tim Burton is in Shanghai to open a show of his props and drawings. "The World of Tim Burton"exhibition, opening today at the Lafayette Art and Design Center in Xintiandi, features original sketches, props and short films, giving attendees an insight into his creative process.

Tim Burton poses for photographs with his drawings on display at "The World of Tim Burton" in Xintiandi.

Over 500 items from the director's archives of more than 10,000 film-related pieces are going on display, split into nine areas based around a movie theme. Some 150 of them have never been shown to the public, like his napkin sketches.

From "Beetlejuice"to "Alice in Wonderland,"the director, producer, artist, writer and animator has carved out a distinctly dark gothic style that remains highly influential.

Seven years ago, New York's MoMA launched an exhibition of Burton's artwork made over the course of his long career. The exhibition turned out to be a massive success, and has since gone to tour cities all over the world.

Looking at his drawings, it's fun to see the continuity throughout Burton's work and how certain characters started to take shape even throughout his early college years animating at CalArts.
