Chinese artist and philosopher Zou Cao, who has been invited to draw a portrait for former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, has recently joined an inter-cultural networking project called 'Be Thinker, WHAT HAS TO BE DONE'.
The project is inspired by German sculptor and installation artist Joseph Beuys, who sailed as part of a group of artists from 1979 to 1981 to explore the notion of 'journey' and connect with the natural environment. Joseph Beuys is widely known as a provocative environmental activist who used his art to raise awareness on environmental destruction.
Zou Cao thinks the project has perfected Joseph Beuys' notion.
"I think Joseph Beuys' notion should be improved via artists' practice in modern times. Through a series of activities including voyages, exhibitions and also public lectures, our goal is to let ordinary citizens all comprehend art and take their initiatives to create art, which weighs a lot heavier than the activities itself."
The project, which was launched on July 29th in the Today Art Museum, will gather eight Chinese artists and six European artists to set sail for half a month off the Scottish isles to create artwork that can shed light on the plight of the environment.
After returning from their voyage, each of them would create a work of art independently and their art pieces would be exhibited on January 2017 in the museum in Beijing.
