On waking from this luxurious dream, Lu questions the desire to chase earthly trappings, and learns that pursuit of the physical world can only lead to suffering.

In Ke and Rubin's "A Shakespearean Handan Dream," Lu's dream is filled with apparitions from the works of Shakespeare.

Characters such as Macbeth and King Lear, whose lives share something in common with Lu, appear in the dream and give the audience a look at how Shakespeare and Tang shared a way of thinking when it came to the big issues in life.

Speaking before the play, Rubin told us that finding a commonality between Tang and Shakespeare was the starting point for this production.

"What was in common," Rubin said, "was that Tang and Shakespeare talk about the big human issues of love, death… and about learning what in the world is important: material goods or the wealth of spiritual growth?"
