Hollywood giant Steven Spielberg was in Beijing on Monday to promote his new film "The BFG" and to talk about his film career at Tsinghua University.

An iconic Hollywood figure, Spielberg said he believed that young people were the future as he stood before 400 university students at the Tsinghua event.

He said that social media has made it easier for young filmmakers to start making films and achieve their dreams. He recalled that when he was young he had to shop his own short films around and persuade strangers to have the patience to view his work. Now, thanks to the internet, more people and studios will see your work.

Steven Spielberg, 69, shared his love, enthusiasm and devotion to filmmaking, adding that he still has several films he hopes to make, including a robot story and a musical. He admitted that superhero comic book movies are dominating the market because young people are looking for heroes, but added that he is not going to make one.

For "The BFG," the director said later at the premiere of the film that he had prepared for years to make the film with the right technology after he bought the screen rights. He believed people's interests will change with time, but he wanted to tell a story that will be timeless.

Spielberg noted that in the film, he hoped audiences would get the idea he wanted to convey: how to put aside differences and seek common ground with patience and mutual understanding.

The film, directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, written by the late Melissa Mathison and based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Roald Dahl, tells the story of an orphaned girl who befriends a benevolent giant, dubbed the "Big Friendly Giant." The giant takes her to Giant Country, where they attempt to stop the man-eating giants that are invading the human world. "The BFG" stars Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader.

Actor Huang Lei and his daughter, who dubbed the Chinese version of the film, actress Fan Bingbing, actor Aarif Lee and many other celebrities attended the premiere. The film, which has already grossed US$175 million worldwide, will open in China on Oct. 14.

Spielberg is here not just to promote his film, but also for a major business deal. One day before the premiere, Alibaba Pictures announced it had acquired a minority stake in Spielberg's Amblin Partners. The two companies will co-produce and finance films for global and Chinese audiences, as well as collaborate on the marketing, distribution and merchandising of Amblin Partners films in China.
