Poem-themed concerts staged in Beijing for children

Beijing Music Festival authorities staged two concerts especially for children at Poly Theatre on the weekend.

The free concerts were based on 81-year old renowned composer Gu Jianfen's album in which 20 famous, ancient, Chinese poems were set to music.
It was a joint performance by China Philharmonic Orchestra and Blue Sky Children's Choir.
Before the concerts began, Gu Jianfen briefed the media on how she felt about the concerts.
"Those songs we selected for this concert are favorites of the children and their parents. The cooperation with China Philharmonic Orchestra is an unprecedented experience in my life, which excited me a lot. I used to join hands with pop bands."
A number of famous poems, including "Dawn of Spring" or Chun Xiao in Chinese and A Traveler's Song or You Zi Yin in Chinese, were brought to life during the concerts.
Gu Jianfen once said there's nothing better than singing to attract a younger audience to memorize the legacy of their ancestors, and the combination of music and poetry has brought her a great deal of satisfaction also.
"From my 70 to 80 years old, I feel so fulfilled since I get so close to children, unlike my peers who may feel empty after retirement. With these children, I live a younger life as if I go back to my childhood. I also feel the path of my life goes longer."
The composer disclosed that she has finished composing melodies for around 50 poems and would continue to set more Chinese literature to music for children in future.
