Casey Affleck won Best Actor for "Manchester by the Sea," which also won best original screenplay writing and was one of only three other films to win multiple Oscars at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. "Moonlight" got three, and Mel Gibson’s "Hacksaw Ridge" took home two.

Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali won their first Oscars for their supporting roles in African-American stories "Fences" and "Moonlight," in an outstanding contrast to the 2016 Academy Awards when no actors of color were even nominated. "Moonlight" also won the best adapted screenplay statuette.

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won the Oscar for best foreign language film for "The Salesman" but was absent from the ceremony in protest of Donald Trump's travel ban.

"My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of (the) other six nations who have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S.," the director said in a statement that was read during the ceremony.

Chinese kungfu megastar Jackie Chan, 62, brought two adorable stuffed panda dolls with him to the Oscars. He was there because he was among those who received an Honorary Oscar during the Governor Awards. Chan had picked up his lifetime achievement Oscar during the November 2016 ceremony, becoming the first Chinese actor to win the award.
