According to the lastest list of film projects released yesterday by the office of China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, "The Mermaid 2" is one of the registered projects.

A brief plot synopsis of the film was also included, indicating that the leading roles will return and fly high to outer space through an interstellar wormhole. However, it could be an intentional fake synopsis to keep Chow's film secret, as he always does.

The project was registered by Lianrui Pictures, a major investor and distributor of the original film.

Chow's "The Mermaid" grossed 3.39 billion yuan (US$517.3 million) in its total run to become the highest grossing Chinese film of all time in 2016. It is not known if the original cast, including Deng Chao and Jelly Lin, will eventually return or if Chow will come back to helm the project.

Jelly Lin, the leading actress of the film, said she didn't even know "The Mermaid 2" was initiated, but she will bless it anyway no matter whether she reprises her role or not.

The film has no release date yet.
