The eighth installment of street racing action film franchise "The Fast and the Furious" smashes Chinese film records, since Thursday midnight. Chinese domestic films have still not produced a strong rival for Hollywood blockbusters this year.

"The Fate of the Furious," also known "Fast 8," took in an estimated 55 million yuan (US$7.99 million) in China, breaking the all-time record for a midnight screening in China held by its previous installment "Furious 7" which was 50.94 million yuan (US$8.2 million) two years ago. It should be noted that "Furious 7" set the record on Saturday night while "Fast 8" breaks it on a normal working day on a Thursday.

With a record-breaking 300 million yuan (US$43.58 million) in presales, "Fast 8" will likely top the all-time single day box office record, held by Stephen Chow and Tsui Hark's "Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back," which sold tickets worth 355 million yuan (US$51.57 million) in one day during Spring Festival this year. It will storm Chinese theaters in the coming weekend.

"The Fate of the Furious," directed by F. Gary Gray and stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron, will also challenge the highest grossing film record ever in China, as its predecessor grossed a stunning 2.42 billion yuan (US$391 million) in China alone and became a cultural phenomenon, partially due to the heated memorial wave for tragically deceased Paul Walker.

The aggressive performances continue its Hollywood reign in the Chinese box office since the Spring Festival. "Kong: Skull Island," "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage" and "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" all passed the 1 billion yuan mark while "Beauty and the Beast," "Logan" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" also had strong performances in China. Thus far, for the last two months, there's no rival from domestic Chinese films which can compete with Hollywood blockbusters.
