"Journey to the West," one of the four classics of Chinese literature written by the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) novelist Wu Cheng'en, will get an impressive shadow puppet treatment. Deftly controlled by puppeteers using rods, the puppet figures create the illusion of moving images on a translucent cloth screen illuminated from behind.

Dates: Nov. 13

Venue: Shanghai Centre Theatre, Shanghai

Cultural events of the week: Nov. 1-7
