Nutrlite, a brand of protein powder sold by US direct sales giant Amway in China, may be extracted from genetically modified soybeans, which have caused adverse health effects in laboratory animals, Xinhua reports.

Amway Nutrlite protein powder products sold in China fail to announce any genetically modified ingredients on their packaging, the report says.

Advertisements pitching the powder as an energy-boosting dietary supplement have been broadcasted all over China, including in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou markets.

Thus far, there is no internationally-recognized position on the safety of genetically modified foods, and no authoritative evidence that these foods produce toxins when ingested by humans. However, studies showed laboratory animals have suffered severe abnormalities, including sudden death, from ingesting genetically-altered soybeans.
