While the US is a major producer of genetically modified corn and soybeans, these foods are rarely consumed domestically. Instead, they are used for animal feed and the production of ethanol, and are also exported to the developing world, including China and sub-Saharan Africa.

In blog posts published in the online community Douban, Chinese consumers of Nutrlite in China complained of a ‘strong physical dependence’ on the product, which has led media reports to liken the powder to ‘heroin.’ Users noted that their physical condition greatly improved after taking the protein powder, but then became immediately worse once dosage stopped.

In the United States, any food which contains more than 0.9 percent transgenic ingredients must contain a consumer warning on its packaging, however in China, such warnings are not required.

Amway (China) released a statement on its Website on August 22, announcing that the Nutrlite protein powder is not made from modified soybeans and it has been certificated by the international authoritative certification body SGS.
