China's six major achievements of the past decade

First, China has become the world's 2nd largest economy, a prominent achievement that has won the giant nation international acclaim. Remarkably enough though, the country has managed to maintain its rapid and steady economic development over the past ten years, despite the negative impact of the global financial crisis which broke out in 2008.

Second, China has made unprecedented progress in improving people's livelihood based on a rapidly developing economy. The government has exempted the agricultural tax and established a national social security system and a medical care network, with a new rural cooperative medical care system covering all rural residents. All school-aged children have been subjected to compulsory education and subsidies are now allocated to solve the issues of textbook, dining and accommodation fees for primary students in the central and western regions of the country.

Third, China has made great progress in developing its political democracy. The nation's socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics is now in place and the democratic progress at the grassroots level, in cadre selection and within the Party itself has greatly enhanced.

Fourth, China has seen rapid development in such cultural industries as media and publishing.

Fifth, China has strived to advance its national defense capability, now having its first aircraft carrier.

And sixth, the relations across the Taiwan Strait have been substantially improved, despite the fact that the country is yet to solve the Taiwan issue.

The CPC's governance over the past decade

China has accumulated vast experience in its governance over the past ten years, part of which had been summarized at the 17th National Congress of the CPC in 2007.

- Emancipating the mind and keeping up with the times. The Party's 17th National Congress summarized the theoretical system of so-called socialism with Chinese characteristics and entered the concept of a "scientific outlook on development" into the CPC Constitution. This form of ideological and theoretical construction can not only unify the overall Party's thought, but also help increase public recognition of the Party's guiding thought.

- Focusing on scientific development. The Party gives top priority to development, and in the meantime stresses that the development should be comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable.

- Underlining social harmony. The Party has strived to make the fruits of development accessible to all people and balance the interests of different social strata.

- Steadily promoting democracy. The Party has stressed the importance of promoting democracy and institutional reforms in a steady and orderly manner.

- Attaching great importance to cultural construction as to meet the public's non-material needs.

- Steadily strengthening the construction of the CPC or the core of the leadership for the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
