For the first time, outsiders were given a glimpse of life inside the Guangdong Detention Center, where many people accused of economic crimes and administrative misconduct live while awaiting trial. The detention center invited 30 people, including members of the media and families of the detainees, to see how people lived behind their walls on Wednesday.

Regular life

Prisoners rise at 6 in the morning and go to sleep at 10 at night. After breakfast, they clean their dorms, read and exercise. They do not do manual labor.

Detainees are allowed to borrow four books from the library every week, and some get books from their family members during biweekly visits.

According to police, most detainees are well-educated and fond of reading. They usually read English material and law books, while some even research the stock market using news reports. Regulations require police to take out reports about detainees' cases before they hand out newspapers.

The regular lifestyle of the detainees has allowed many of the former high-ranking officials to regain their health and put on weight.
