The China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), the birthplace of China's nuclear technology, celebrated its 60th anniversary of founding Monday in Beijing.

The Institute of Modern Physics, predecessor of the CIAE and the first research institute on nuclear science in China, was founded in 1950. In the following 60 years, the CIAE has developed into an institute with research projects in many fields of nuclear science such as nuclear physics and chemistry, radiochemistry, reactor technology and isotope technology.

The CIAE has accomplished remarkable achievements in various aspects of basic nuclear research, including nuclear data, radioactive ion beams and neutron scattering technology, said Zhao Zhixiang, head of the CIAE.

In May, the China Advanced Research Reactor went critical, and this marked a great improvement in China's comprehensive strength in the basic research of nuclear science, Zhao said.
