Senior Chinese mainland official Hui Liangyu said on Thursday that the mainland and Taiwan were "complementary" in agriculture and called on both sides to expand agricultural cooperation.

Both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have their advantages in agriculture and there is a large potential for further cooperation, said Hui, a Political Bureau member of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

Hui made his remarks at a cross-Strait agriculture exposition in the mainland city of Zhangzhou City in coastal Fujian Province, which is only separated from Taiwan by a strip of water.

More than 1,200 enterprises from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan attended the exposition this year.
