The tomb of Chinese painter Qi Baishi which is located in Haidian District, Beijing, is covered by garbage - and this has come to light just as Qi's work Laoshaonian sold for 10.8 million yuan ($ 1.62 million) at an auction in Sichuan on Sunday, the Beijing Times reported.

The tomb is located in the north of Weigong village, next to various inexpensive restaurants and a fruit stall.

One local resident said that some people throw their garbage on the tomb, and some of the restaurant customers use the place as an outdoor restroom - leading to unpleasant odors.

Qi Jingshan, great grandson of Qi Baishi, was reported in the Chinese press as saying that such behavior is humiliating not only for Qi Baishi and his descendants, but also for the thousands of people who admire his art. And he added that he hopes the relevant authorities will put an end to this conduct.

An official with the Haidian Culture Committee said that they are not directly in charge of the illegal constructions - meaning the restaurants - but they have reported the problem to the officials who are responsible for such matters.
