Macao reports 1st A/H1N1 flu-related death in 2011

The Health Bureau of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) confirmed on Thursday a 47-year-old female patient infected with the A/H1N1 flu virus died this morning, the first death case related to the influenza in Macao.

The patient developed flu symptoms, such as cough and fever, on Jan. 14 and was admitted into hospital on Jan. 18. Her condition deteriorated the next day and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment, where she was tested positive for A/H1N1 flu virus.

The patient, who had never been inoculated with A/H1N1 flu vaccine or seasonal flu vaccine, was announced dead Thursday morning.

According to the Health Bureau, the patient's son and sister also developed flu symptoms but recovered soon.

The Bureau said it is watching closely the flu situation in schools as students are back to study from vacation, adding that the flu wave can last for months.
