China will strive to double its number of active volunteers and improve its efforts to aid disabled people over the next five years, an official from the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF) said Saturday.

"We hope to have 10 million registered volunteers by the year 2015 to help the country's tens of millions of disabled persons," said Lu Shiming, vice chairman of the CDPF.

China currently has 5.3 million registered volunteers who are providing one-on-one aid services to more than 200,000 disabled people, according to Lu.

"It is of great significance to help disabled people in solving their difficulties and to help them realize a valuable and dignified life," Lu said.

China has 83 million disabled people, according to CDPF statistics.

The country has made much progress in providing social security for the disabled, although some of them are still living in hardship, Lu said.
