Yuan Chunqing was elected secretary of north China's Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Tuesday.

Yuan was elected to the post at the first plenary session of the 10th CPC Shanxi Provincial Committee held in Taiyuan, capital of the coal-rich province.

Yuan was appointed as the Communist Party chief in Shanxi in May 2010 after serving as governor of the neighboring Shaanxi Province for three years.

Yuan, 59 and a native of Hanshou of Hunan Province, is a member of the 17th CPC Central Committee.
