11 identified in central China boat accident

The list of 11 victims, one dead and 10 missing, in a boat accident in central China's Hunan Province, was released Friday by local officials from the neighboring province of Hubei where the victims came from.

The sand-carrying boat capsized at around 4 a.m. Thursday in high winds in a tributary of the Dongting Lake, China's second largest freshwater lake, located in Hunan, the maritime bureau in Hunan said in a press release Thursday.

Seventeen people, mostly boatmen and their family members, were on board at the time of the accident. Deng Hongqing, a member of the crew aged 40, was confirmed dead. Three children of the boatmen, one boy and two girls aged under eight, were among the missing, according to Jingzhou municipal government of Hubei.

So far, only six people has been rescued.

The 1,500-tonne boat was from Hubei, and registered there also.
