Man who saved little girl on balcony finally found

A man who scaled an apartment building to save a three-year-old toddler about to fall from the fourth floor, and then left quietly, has been found after a week-long "manhunt," the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Zhou Chong, 23, was passing the building in Guangzhou, capital of southern China's Guangdong Province, on June 3 when he saw a girl dangling outside the window with her head stuck in an iron pot holder. Zhou, a former electrician accustomed to working aloft, rushed into the building and climbed out of a third-floor apartment to save the girl.
The girl's grateful parents couldn't find him as Zhou left immediately. Pictures and videos of his holding the girl in the air spread online with people across the city joining in the "manhunt."
The girl was left at home alone when her grandfather went shopping. She climbed out the window about 11:30am and got stuck in the flower holder. The girl's neck was reddened under the force, and the holder looked ready to break.
Shocked people nearby spread a quilt out on the ground, preparing to catch the girl if she fell. Zhou, a Hubei Province native, noticed the people gathered in front of the building. After seeing the girl, Zhou proceeded to the third-floor apartment, just under the girl's house, and the resident let him in. He climbed onto the balcony and stood on the windowsill, trying to help the girl climb into her house. But Zhou could barely reach her, so he held her feet in his hands to support the girl's weight to free her neck and give her fresh air.
"The girl was foaming at the mouth when I got close to her," Zhou told the newspaper.
She cried and Zhou comforted her. Zhou stood on his tiptoes for about 10 minutes before firefighters broke into the girl's apartment and sawed the holder to save her.
"I'm not sure whether the windowsill was solid enough to carry my weight," Zhou told the newspaper.
"But I didn't think about too much at that time."
