In September 1965, the Institute of Biochemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences managed to synthesize crystalline bovine insulin for the first time in the world. In September 1978, the Nobel Chemistry Committee wrote to China and demanded to see a candidate for the Prize. However, due to the remarkable achievements of the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States, Chinese nominee Niu Jingyi regrettably failed to obtain the top spot.
