9 dead as Henan highway bridge blows up

Nine people were confirmed dead and eleven were injured after an expressway bridge partially collapsed due to a truck explosion Friday morning in central China's Henan Province, the local government said.

"Several cars fell from the bridge," a witness told a CCTV reporter, which previously reported 26 were dead. Other news outlets such as China News Service also reported local police confirmed 11 dead.

China.org.cn has not yet been able to verify the death toll.

The explosion, which occurred around 8:52 am, caused several vehicles to tumble from the bridge in Mianchi County, the city government of Sanmenxia told Xinhua.

An 80-meter-long section of the bridge collapsed as the exploding truck carried fireworks. Six vehicles have been retrieved from the debris.

Local police and rescuers are rushing to the accident scene.

Search and rescue efforts are under way. Investigation shows one of the trucks carried explosives.Traffic control was imposed on the expressway.
