Staying up all night on New Year's Eve, red packets, temple fairs, family reunion dinners, etc., all these Spring Festival traditions are still popular nowadays. However, with the development of the society, people have added some new content to these longstanding traditions and today new festive customs are emerging.

Lion dancers put on a show at the Ditan Temple Fair in Beijing on Jan. 22, 2013.

"Yesterday's fashion is today's folklore and today's fashion tomorrow's folklore. The things we try at present may become the folk custom in the future if they can be accepted and practiced by more people." Gao Wei, secretary general of the Beijing Folklore Society and a true folklorist himself, said. In his opinion, ten new customs of the Spring Festival have gradually received public recognition over the past decade.

First, people nationwide watch the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.

It's almost the first choice for most Chinese families to watch the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. The gala, which first aired in 1983, has accompanied the Chinese people on many sleepless New Year's Eves. Watching the gala has also become a way to bid farewell to the old year and usher in the new.

"After watching the Spring Festival Gala, the family members enjoy themselves together in front of the TV. However, the communication among them may become less. So it is worth further discussing how to ensure the continuation of parent-child communication. After all, reunion and communication are the Spring Festival themes." Gao said.
