Second, people blog, send messages and emails to wish each other a Happy New Year.

Visiting houses and paying a New Year house call has become old-fashioned for the Chinese. In the past, people would visit each other's house and extend presents or cards. With the swift social change, sending messages and emails to wish each other a Happy New Year is rapidly becoming a mainstream practice.

"However, many respondents say these congratulatory messages are fixed in form and monotonous in content. They are somewhat perfunctory," said Gao, "These messages should vary with each individual. The messages with a personal emotion inside can have a good effect."
