German auto giant Daimler has dismissed Rainer Gartner, its senior executive in China, from his current post, over an insulting remark, the company said yesterday.

Rainer Gartner

Rainer Gartner, president and CEO at Daimler Trucks & Buses China Ltd., made a disparaging comment against Chinese people, saying that "I am in China one year already. The first thing I learned here is: All you Chinese are bastard!"

What he said and did has caused negative social impact, which is also against the company’s corporate culture and brand concept, according to Daimler’s statement.

Rainer Gartner, president and CEO at Daimler Trucks & Buses China Ltd., made a disparaging comment against Chinese people, saying that "I am in China one year already. The first thing I learned here is: All you Chinese are bastard!"

His gaffe came after a parking row with a Chinese driver at a residential community in Beijing's northeastern Shunyi District.

The quarrel drew passersby to come and defend the Chinese, but they were pepper sprayed by the German executive.

“His conduct went against the values of ‘equality and mutual-respect’ that Daimler has been long upheld, and we are deeply sorry for the case which has drawn huge public attention and concern,” the company said.

The local police in the district revealed that the dispute between the two sides has already been settled through mediation.
