In 1860, the Anglo-French allied forces invaded Beijing and destroyed the Old Summer Palace. They set the entire facility ablaze, and the massive fire lasted three days. 

The British and French soldiers plundered valuable properties kept in the palace. The 12 bronze animal heads were among these. Those that couldn't be taken were destroyed.
