Workers begin to rebuild factory
Adjust font size:

A month after the earthquake struck Sichuan, people are slowly but steadily piecing their lives together. CCTV reporter Xie Zheng went to Shifang, one of the hardest hit areas, to meet workers at a chemical fertilizer factory who demonstrated their courage both during the disaster and now, rebuilding.

They've lost 91 of their colleagues. But Guo Shengjun and his team can''t wait any longer to get things started.

They've lost 91 of their colleagues. But Guo Shengjun and his team can't wait any longer to get things started. Their first job is to clear all the rubble and find anything that can be used. And more importantly, to guard against any possible chemical leaks, as his factory deals with a lot of ammonia and sulphur, which, combined, could set off an explosion that could kill tens of thousands.

Guo Shengjun from Yingfeng industries said, "Immediately after the quake, before the army could reach us, I organized about a dozen Party members to try to pull people out of the ruins. Our team expanded quickly to hundreds of Party and non-Party members. Then we did everything we could to put out a massive fire."

Hundreds of workers were taking their break when the quake struck, and their dorm collapsed along with the office buildings and entertainment facilities. Some did not escape.

Guo says the hurt hasn't left his heart, but it would be worse to let his colleagues down.

Guo Shengjun said, "We've lost our very dear friends; our facilities are badly damaged. But we are still here; we cannot lose heart."
