Piven's prize was the first award handed out at the 60th Primetime Emmys, an annual celebration of the best of U.S. television that this year focused on the glory days of the medium with a heavy dose of clips and special tributes.

The show kicks off the premiere week of prime-time TV's new season, looked upon by industry executives as a kind of reboot after the disruptions caused by the Hollywood writers strike.

The award for best supporting actress in a comedy went to Jean Smart for her role on the new ABC series 'Samantha Who.'
