Sun Li plays Figaro and says he has developed a strong understanding of the character.
“In this story, Figaro is a cheeky and quick-witted guy, adding an element of fun to the opera. Though the songs composed by Mozart are romantic, The Marriage of Figaro is a comedy. So I think the adaptation remains true to the spirit of the original with Chinese humor added to suit local tastes,” said Sun.
Both amateurs and professionals perform side by side, real-life brides and bridegrooms join the aristocratic wedding scenes alongside the opera singers on stage during Act III.
“We recruited couples through auditions and they have gone through rehearsals with us. I think they come here for fun and their experience on the stage will surely bring them unforgettable memories,” said Li.
“This performance is not only about music, nor is it only about theater. To create an effective performance, it is about the audience, too.” Li said.
This Chinese version of The Marriage of Figaro will be staged in Beijing’s Century Theater on Sunday and Monday. It is also the closing performance of the Second China International Youth Art Festival.
