Lesson Twenty-two  At a Canteen
 
mài kè: wŏ men qù shí táng chī fàn ba.
麦克: 我们去食堂吃饭吧。
Mike: Let’s go to the dining room to have lunch.
   
lì li: wŏ xiăng chī jiăo zi. nĭ xiăng chī shén me?
丽丽: 我想吃饺子。你想吃什么?
Lili: I’d like to have dumplings. What would you like?
   
mài kè: wŏ xiăng chī mán tou hé chăo cài.
麦克: 我想吃馒头和炒菜。
Mike: I’d like to have steamed bread and fried dishes.
   
lì li: măi jiăo zi zài zhèr pái duì, măi mán tou zài nàr pái duì.
丽丽: 买饺子在这儿排队,买馒头在那儿排队。
Lili: Line here for dumplings, there for steamed bread.
   
mài kè: shī fu, wŏ măi èr liăng mán tou hé yī fèn mù xū ròu. Sì kuài qián.
麦克: 师傅,我买二两馒头和一份木须肉。四块钱。
Mike: I want two liang of steamed bread and a stir-fried meat with scramble eggs, sir. Four yuan.
   
lì li: wŏ măi sān liăng jiăo zi. sān kuài qián.
丽丽: 我买三两饺子。三块钱。
Lili: I want three liang of dumplings. Three yuan.
   
mài kè: nà biān yŏu zuò. wŏ men qù nàr zuò ba.
麦克: 那边有座。我们去那儿坐吧。
Mike: There are some seats over there. Let’s go there.
   
lì li: jīn tiān de fàn wèi dào hĕn bú cuò.
丽丽: 今天的饭味道很不错。
Lili: Today’s food is very delicious.
   
 
Some foreigners who come to China like to have meals with Chinese people at canteens or dining rooms in their units or schools. In this way they may get to know better, make friendly contacts and promote their friendship with the people there. Furthermore, it is much cheaper to eat in dining rooms than in hotels or restaurants.

食堂 shí táng: canteen, dining room

饺子 jiăo zi: dumplings

馒头 mán tou: steamed bread

炒菜 chăo cài: stir-fried dish

木须肉 mù xū ròu: stir-fried meat with scramble eggs

liăng: liăng (Chinese traditional unit of weight)

师傅 shī fu: sir

zuò: seat

fàn: food, meal

味道不错 wèi dào bú cu: delicious
