Preparation for APEC FMM Goes Well


Preparatory work for the 8th APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Finance Ministers Meeting (FMM) is progressing well, and the registration of delegates and media representatives has begun, an official with the Chinese Ministry of Finance said Monday.

The 8th APEC FMM, an important part of the APEC series of meetings and activities this year, will be held September 8-9 in Suzhou of east China's Jiangsu Province.

Chinese Finance Minister Xiang Huaicheng is the chairman of this FMM, and Vice-Minister of Finance Jin Liqun will chair the 8th APEC FMM Finance and Central Bank Deputies Meeting.

The theme of the 2001 APEC economic leaders' meeting is "New Challenges in the New Century: Achieving Common Prosperity through Participation and Cooperation."

The corresponding theme of 2001 APEC FMM is "Growth with Restructuring, Stability and Equity."

Topics on the FMM agenda are: strengthening dialogue on macro-economic policies to promote economic and financial stability and sustainable economic growth; deepening structural adjustment and reform, and establishing a sound financial system to build a solid foundation for sustainable economic growth; and promoting economic growth on a fair and equitable basis in order to minimize adverse impacts and maximize broad-based benefits in the process of globalization, and to ensure that the majority of people benefit from globalization.

The official from the Ministry of Finance said that journalists from home and abroad are welcome to cover the event, and all necessary formalities can be handled through the APEC official website at www.apec-china.org.cn.
