Sino-Canadian Harvest Fruitful
In honour of a new science exchange agreement signed yesterday, China's leading science agency and a Canadian research centre will meet today to look back at what the two parties have already accomplished.

The Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the International Development Research Centre of Canada will meet in Beijing to review what they have done in the past 20 years.

Here is a summary of what the research centre and the science ministry have done:

yThe Canadian centre and Guizhou Provincial Academy of Agricultural Science kicked off a study in March 1995 on community-based management of natural resources in the mountainous areas of Southwest China's Guizhou Province. After three years of study, a series of measures were drawn up to sustain the harmonious development of the population, the natural resources and the environment of Guizhou, which is a prototypical mountain farming province.

yThe Canadian centre and China's Guiding Centre for Children's Health Care and Disease Prevention conducted three phases of research starting in 1987. They studied preventing pneumonia among China's rural children, ways to alleviate deadly cases of pneumonia and enhancing community-based health care in urban areas. The final phase will be done in 2001.

yThe Canadian centre and China's Qinghua University started a research programme in 1984 to improve energy technology in China's rural areas and analyze urban residents' demand for and consumption of energy.
