As part of the efforts to maintain social stability, Beijing municipal courts will intensify adjudicative work to crush any anti-government movements and splittist crimes, evil cult-related crimes such as those associated with the outlawed Falun Gong cult, according to the law. More efforts will be made to stop the abduction and trafficking of women and children, as well as halting the activities of organized criminal gangs and maintaining the fight against shoddy goods, in order to safeguard people’s life and property. Various felonies will be punished with the utmost severity.

It is reported that, in 2000, a total of 218,467 lawsuits were freshly recorded and under investigation, 222,728 cases (including longstanding ones) were wound up, a res litigiosae amount of 51.62 billion was settled (up 12.2%, 13.4% and 13.2% respectively from 1999). Especially, the verdict in the bribery case of the former vice-chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, Cheng Kejie, had great implications and dealt a severe psychological blow to all those who give and receive bribes.
