Jiang Calls for Strengthening Sino-US Ties

The United States should, together with China, advance Sino-US relations in a healthy, steady way by handling the Taiwan issue properly in line with the one-China policy and the guidelines of the three Sino-US joint communiques.

President Jiang Zemin made the remarks April 26 in Beijing during his meeting with Dr. John H. Marburger, assistant to the US president and director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the US, who was invited by Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Xu Guanhua to attend the 10th meeting of the China-US Joint Commission on Science and Technology Cooperation.

China and the US have on the whole maintained good relations recently, Jiang said, noting that bilateral cooperation in economy and trade, counter-terrorism as well as science and technology have made new progress, with consultations on major international and regional issues beefed up.

"But bilateral relations have also suffered undue interference, " he said.

Acknowledging that bilateral technological cooperation between China and the US is on a win-win roll, he said that extensive and fruitful technological cooperation has been made in more than 30 fields over the past 23 years, contributing to the economic and social development and the improvement of the people's living standards.

Marburger regarded the Joint Commission meeting as a very "successful" one, saying that the consolidation of bilateral technological cooperation conforms to the interests of both countries.

He also voiced the willingness of his country to strengthen cooperation with China in the already agreed fields.
