China to Quadruple 2000 GDP by 2020
In his report to the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Jiang Zemin outlined the objectives of building a well-off society in an all-round way in China, one of which is to "quadruple the GDP (gross domestic product) of the year 2000 by 2020 and markedly enhance China's overall national strength and international competitiveness".

Figures provided by the National Statistics Bureau show that China's GDP for the year 2000 was 8.9404 trillion RMB yuan, or about US$1.08 trillion. In order to fulfill the objective put forth in Jiang's report, China's GDP should reach 35.7616 trillion yuan by the year 2020, or about US$4.32 trillion according to the current exchange rate.

In the last two decades of the 20th century, China had already attained its previous strategic goal of quadrupling its GDP.
