The World University Games have kicked off with a splendid opening ceremony in the World Cup Stadium in Daegu, South Korea.
College athletes from over 170 countries and regions around the world are entering the stadium with waves of applause from over 50,000 excited spectators.
Representatives from North and South Korea are walking hand in hand and shoulder by shoulder. A surge of thunder-like cheers explodes right now.
The chairman of the organizing committee, Daegu Mayor Cho Hae-nyong, and chairman of the world college students sports governing body George Killian are welcoming athletes and coaches from around the world. They know the tournament will be a total success.
South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun declares the Games open.
Athletes will battle for 185 gold medals in the 11 days of competition. China has sent a 330-strong team to take part in the Daegu Games. Delegation head Duan Shijie pledges they will go all out for the best possible result.
