Chinese Vice President Meets Hong Kong Delegation

The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DABHK), adhering to the "one country, two systems" principle and to the Basic Law, has made contributions to Hong Kong's return to the motherland as well as its prosperity and stability, said Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong Saturday.

Zeng made the remark in meeting with a delegation from the DABHK, which was set up in 1992.

In the six years since Hong Kong's return to the motherland, the "one country, two systems" principle has been successfully implemented, Zeng said.

The central government will continue to stick to the principles as well as that of "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy and the Basic Law, he said, giving support to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government headed by Tung Chee Hwa.

The central government will fully support the recovery and development of the Hong Kong economy, he said.

In the meeting, the delegates reported some problems with Hong Kong's economy and local people's lives. They said they had suggested Tung enhance economic cooperation with Shanghai and Tung agreed.

Zeng said he agreed with the suggestion, expressing hope that the DABHK will do more things to benefit the Hong Kong people.
