Pro-coalition Protesters Hold Major Gathering in Taiwan

More than 50,000 supporters of the opposition coalition of the Kuomintang and the People First Party held another large-scale gathering on Saturday in Taipei, the provincial capital of Taiwan, to protest against the unfair election.

The protesters urged the authorities to make public the truth about the shooting incident.

Lien Chan, chairman of the Kuomintang, and James Soong, chairman of the People First Party, addressed the gathering, blaming Chen Shui-bian for his insistence on combining the referendum with the election and questioning the mysterious election-eve shooting, saying that these had produced an enormous impact on the election and made it unfair and unjust.

They urged Chen Shui-bian to respond as early as possible to the masses of people who demanded an independent committee to investigate into the truth of the shooting.
