Taiwan Derailment Injures 14

A passenger train carrying 92 passengers derailed in Pingtung County, Taiwan Province at 00:30 AM today, injuring 14 people including one seriously, according to www.ettoday.com.

The train was traveling from Kaohsiung to Pingtung City when the accident took place.

Six carriages tilted, and most passengers suffered from shock and other minor ailments and were taken to a nearby hospital for care.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

According to the head of Pingtung's railway station, it could not have been caused by speeding as the train was traveling at 80-90 kilometers per hour, slower than its fastest speed of 110 kilometers per hour.

Primary investigations found some lengths of track missing, and the police suspect that they were stolen.
