Schwarzenegger Calls for Expanded Sino-US Energy Cooperation

California governor and Hollywood movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, said in Beijing on Tuesday that energy cooperation between the United States and China has been fruitful.

The two countries face a prosperous future cooperating in the areas of energy and sustainable development, Schwarzenegger said, addressing an international conference on China-US relations.

His view was echoed by Zhang Guobao, vice minister in charge of China's State Development and Reform Commission, who said that China and the United States, as two of the world's biggest oil producers and consumers, share common interests in securing a stable energy supply, maintaining stability in the international oil market and protecting the environment.

Companies of both countries have conducted cooperation in such fields as oil and gas exploration, renewable energy development, energy efficiency and clean energy technology, Zhang said.

According to Zhang, US oil companies invested or participated in more than 30 oil and gas projects in China and the two governments also maintain close cooperation in the energy sector.

Energy analysts believe that developed countries, including the US, have advanced technology in energy exploration and energy efficiency, which China badly needs to boost its economic development.

"China has much to learn from the developed countries about advanced technologies concerning renewable energy, and energy efficiency for sustainable development," Zhang said.
