Russian, Indonesian Presidents Discuss Bilateral Ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Indonesian counterpart, Megawati Soekarnoputri, met in Shanghai Friday to discuss bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.

In a briefing to reporters, Indonesian Foreign Minister Hasan Wirayuda said the two leaders agreed to set up a joint committee to guide the development of economic and trade ties between the two countries.

On the issue of combating terrorism, the two countries have identical views, said the minister. Both maintained that the United Nations should play a leading role in the fight against terrorism and that the U.N. Charter and international law should be respected.

The two leaders are here for the ninth APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting at the weekend.
