Prospect of Economic Development Bright
for Asia-Pacific: APEC Leaders

Leaders of the member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) agreed here Sunday morning that the Asia-Pacific region has a bright prospect of economic development, sources said.

The leaders reached the consensus at the Ninth APEC Economic Leaders Meeting at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, which was chaired by Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

According to the sources, the leaders discussed two topics at the meeting in the morning, focusing on global and regional economic situation, and human capacity building.

APEC members should continue to enhance their cooperation on a mutually beneficial basis under the current situation of globalization and new economy, the leaders held.

APEC members should promote trade and investment, and support the multilateral trade system as well as the launching of a new round of World Trade Organization talks, they agreed.

Meanwhile, the leaders agreed that member economies of the APEC should base themselves on the diversified pattern of the region and intensify their efforts in economic and technological cooperation and capacity building so as to seize the opportunities, meet with the challenges in the new century and realize common prosperity, sources said.
