FM Spopkewoman Briefs on Documents and Expectations of AELM


Ms. Zhang Qiyue, spokesperson for the China Secretariat for APEC 2001, said this morning at a news briefing held at International Media Centre that the Leaders' Declaration will be issued after the 9th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting (AELM).

The Leaders' Declaration will be a reflection of the consensus reached by the APEC member economies on a series of important issues such as the current macro-economic situation, human capacity building and the future development of APEC in face of opportunities and challenges of globalization and the New Economy in the new century, said Ms. Zhang.

The spokeswoman said, the Declaration also includes two annexes, namely the Shanghai Accord and the e-APEC Strategy. She said, the Shanghai Accord is aimed at realizing the Bogor goals and intensifying cooperation among the member economies , which will enhance the vitality of APEC.

Referring to the "e-APEC Strategy", she said, it will present forward- looking and clear working plans in the face of the New Economy. This important document will give directions to APEC's future work and promote the further development of the New Economy so as to gear up economic growth, she noted.

Ms, Zhang expressed her belief that the ongoing APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will bring about fruitful results.

Ms. Zhang also told reporters that President Jiang Zemin will host a luncheon in honor of the economic leaders who are attending the AELM. At the luncheon, the Leaders will discuss the issue of anti-terrorism and after that the APEC Leaders' Statement on Counter-Terrorism will be issued, expressing their common position on counter-terrorism and intensifying anti-terror cooperation among the member economies.
